    An idealised vintage Phase 90

Posted by Jim on 11th Apr 2017

A really solid phaser. Fundamentally a recreation of a vintage Phase 90, but with a true bypass switch, bright blue LED, and a 9 volt DC power jack. The sound is spot on vintage Phase 90, perhaps with an extended range of speeds at either end of the dial; it's able to go both slower at one extreme and quicker at the other. The tone itself is pretty much perfect vintage Phase 90; lush phase that is neither too subtle nor too pronounced, and the single rate knob makes it easy to dial in. It really becomes a part of your sound, rather than just sitting on top of it like some phasers can. It's ideal for Pink Floyd and Van Halen style tones; unsurprising as both these bands used Phase 90's, and it can do a good Univibe impression with the rate set around 2-3 o'clock. If you are in the market for a vintage style Phase 90, this is definitely a pedal to consider; particularly with the added benefits of true bypass, LED and 9 volt jack. Try the pedal before or after gain pedals, as the tones are slightly different. I also found the tone to be slightly smoother with a battery than when running off a power supply, though the difference was very slight. The pedal comes in a very nice box with a plush velvet bag, and shipping was very prompt.
